A very pretty ski resort set on the French/Italian border; its gentle, wide, snow-sure slopes coupled with lots of trees on the soft-sided mountains make it an unthreatening and very attractive place to ski especially for mixed abilities. The village is authentic, with a cute church and bell tower ringing out during the day and lovely traditional buildings. It hadn’t snowed for weeks before we went but the snow still stayed in great condition (apart from the sector behind the resort, which was south facing and became super slushy in the afternoon). Very easy to ski over to the first point in Italy, using the chondola and then one ski lift again over that direction, followed by a gentle red/blue .... turning into a delightful blue (I think) track through trees, down to Claviere. Before you get to actual Claviere, there are a few little restaurants up the mountain on the halfway down point. All the runs in Montgenevre are easy as the snow holds well, the pistes are all wide and so there are several ways to ski em all down! It’s a really delightful place to ski with lots of variety of scene. Nothing piste-wise for experts but LOADS of off-piste possibilities especially for safe skiing between trees. Well kept pistes which are groomed every night. The local people, lift operators, piste patrollers and the saisonnaire’s are very friendly. English is widely spoken. A little tricky to get to, especially with equipment, but do-able if you can’t get a transfer bus. Flight to Turin, bus (just under an hour) to main station in Turin (Puerto Nova) then train to Oulx. Taxi (or lift from your friendly apartment owner or travel agency!) about 20 mins to Montgenevre. We skied in Sestriere and Sauze d’Oulx on one of the days, part of the Mont de Lune pass, which was a great addition to the weeks’ skiing.Nightlife for us revolved around the Le Graal pub which has live music (v good live music to boot!) nearly every other day, and has engaged and friendly staff.Their apres ski starts at 6pm so it was great. Reasonable choice of different restaurants. Quite a bit to do for non-skiers. There is a large Spa with hydro baths and treatments. You can go to Briancon on the local bus which is a lovely town. There is quite some “cross country” skiing available and snow shoeing paths/guided tours ending in gluhwein in a yurt!! And a toboggan run. Was surprised about this resort - how much I enjoyed it, and would def recommend it for a relaxing type of ski trip especially for intermediates - but I was also surprised at observing quite a number of technically very good skiers skiing about, more than I expected, which must say something. That said, it probably attracts a few Italians for weekend skiing, being fairly close to Turin!
Old resort and town that for some reason is overlooked by people. It is a little further to airports than some places. I've been to a dozen or so resorts and this is perfect for families. We had huge slopes to ourselves at times, and evenings in a town that is really quiet.
Wonderful resort with such an expansive ski area. My children are 5&8 and we’ve been to Les Arc the last 2 years so to come somewhere else to push them out of their comfort zone was great. They had such a large choice of runs to go on and my daughter loved the snow park. We opted to only have a lesson on 1 of the days. So they went out and did some runs including a black and saw some marmots (which was their highlight). All in all a lovely resort
This is a stunning ski resort, traditional and friendly locals! Can’t wait for my next trip and look forward to some great snow and amazing food
Came from Sestrière for a days skiing, and it was great. To the top and lovely long red runs back, a few great blacks and some long blue/greens down into the village. Good lunch as well. But the snow at the top was super, great for some long fast carving. Will visit again.
