Ashley and Laurie (The campgrounds staff) were extremely informative and accommodating. I haven’t been camping in nearly 30 years so I didn’t know what to expect, but the overnight stay exceeded my expectations. My two friends and I come to the beach at Fort Tilden all summer long via public transportation so it was refreshing that we were able to drop off our belongings after the 3 PM check-in and only take necessities to the beach. Ashley let us use one of the site’s wagons and some Tommy Bahama’s chairs for our beach day.
After we watched the sun set on the beach, we came back to the site where the fire pit was already going strong. Our group of three had one large tent (that included a bed and a cot add-on). There were portable lights on our porch that came with each tent, as well as sunscreen, towels, wash cloths, a warm sleeping bag, and a blanket on top of the bed. Sometimes, when you are at a campground with people you don’t know, it can be a toss up as to how the vibe will be. While my friends and I were three single people, the other groups were all families. We ended up all getting along and had interesting conversations well into the late night (ask Ashley about the Camp Rockaway book club).
After watching the sun rise over the beach the next morning (and having complimentary granola and fresh coffee brewed by Laurie) my friend and I tested out the showers. I was surprised to have warm water (via a pulley rope), as well as shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in each of the two showers. There were two porta-potties (but an actual restroom is about a 10 minute walk across the field). If you get up early enough, you may also see the horses in their fenced-off area (the cops ride them when patrolling the beach). Laurie also gave us some tips for things we could explore in the nearby area where we were able to get some great pictures. Check out was at 11, but Ashley held on to some of our backpacks so that we could get one last beach day in before heading back to the reality of working from our bedrooms.
Fort Tilden is a unique place, but both Ashley and Laurie of Camp Rockaway made it even more special. I am looking forward to going back for two nights next summer!
We had a fantastic couple of days at Camp Rockaway.
The accommodations were great, and the staff friendly and accommodating. The have morning coffee/tea and cliff/kind bars. They’re a couple of minutes from the beach and they had salved beach chairs and umbrellas for use. At night they have a fire going and it’s a great place to eat dinner or eat the s’mores they have conveniently packaged and available for purchase. There were lots of mosquitos and sand flies (in sept) but they provided tons of anti bug spray. Can’t wait for next year!
It's all in the details.
My stay at Camp Rockaway Fort Tilden was such a relaxing and refreshing experience.
The tents were comfortable. The shower stalls were clean. Staff consistently tended to the bathroom facilities. Oh, and the staff (every single one) was helpful at every moment they needed to be.
The camp manager was accommodating as can be. When she left a watering can on the porch of the tent so we could rinse the sand off our feet, I realized the love is in the details of the camp.
I highly recommend a stay with these folks.
