I entrusted my 100 year old Steinway M to them for a complete renovation. The results are beyond anything I could have hoped for. What was a cracked finish is now a rich dark brown satin finish. New strings, new pins, fittings polished, new wheels with everything fitting in with the original style. My Steinway may be 100 years old, but it looks brand new. Most important, of course, is the sound. It's absolutely perfect. They took their time to get it exactly right. It still sounds like my piano, but somehow better. It still feels like my piano, but more even.
Don't rush them. Let them take their time and do it right. They are old world craftsmen and take great pride in what they do. The owner, Rick Smith, is a fascinating jack of all trades. Let him take you for a wander trough his various collections. He owns over 300 pianos...each more special than the last. He has a huge collection of films, one of the most extensive collections of sheet music around, an impressive autograph collection, player piano rolls, and, I'm sure, other collections that I didn't get to see. This is THE place to go for any and all piano repairs, servicing, and tuning in the NY area. My thanks to all who worked on my piano.
After a house fire, I helped my mom purchase a replacement piano from Rick a few years ago. He is a terrific, honorable, and extremely talented person. The Piano Exchange is basically a museum. If you like pianos. This is your spot. It’s a warehouse full of unique antique pianos available for purchase and/or custom restoration. Thanks Rick.
Let me set the record straight here. First: This place mainly sells pianos and they have hundreds of all ages from which to choose. Then they also repair pianos with the highest level of expertise. My piano was pretty destroyed by a move from the west coast to the east and they have painstakingly and beautifully restored it to beyond its former glory. The (repair) shop team is as knowledgeable as it gets from internal repair, to tuning, to wood work. And their prices are reasonable.
Rick, the owner, is an absolute kick and totally unique. He is a piano Guru and collector of pianos, player piano sheets and film (as in old movies). That is where his priorities and expertise lie. Honestly, (in response to the other reviews), yes, he could use a sharp, personal assistant who can handle all the paperwork, financials and administrative tasks .However, I do think he is super nice guy and highly knowledgeable. He may not always be able to quote you on your repair until the job is done because he does not know how long each individual repair will take. And to your advantage, he does not pad the bill to accommodate that in advance.
He’s old school and one of a kind. Treat yourself to check out his Glen Cove warehouse, and if you are lucky, maybe he will let you see his shop for piano repair. WOW loved The whole experience.
From the beginning when we were deciding what piano to buy, to the very end when our baby grand was tuned at our house... Wonderful service. So happy I went with these guys. Even the guys that brought the piano into the house were professional and neat. Owner Rick is an awesome guy. Thank you.
