I feel like this is a poorly visited gem. I could use some love but there is enough to see that is worth the visit. You can’t drive to it as it’s on a military base. I’m out need to park outside the base and walk in. Probably a 15 minute walk to the Visitor Center. The base itself has lots of beautiful old historic homes and a public pool.
Cool place. A small fort which is located on the shores of the bay. away from the bustle of the city. Cool staff will help you plunge into the history of the fort. There are many locations for your family in a quiet place.
Fort Totten is a decommissioned US Army base. Most of the land the base was on has been turned over to various government agencies-NYPD, NYFD, Army Reserve, etc. The Visitor Center is in the midst of the grounds, about 15 minutes from the parking lot, which is right outside the grounds in Fort Totten Park.
Entrance to the visitor center is free. It has a small museum in it that gives some information about the army base .
Some of the area where the army base was was left as is and is worth visiting . Urban Park Rangers leave periodically from the visitors center and give tours of this area, showing where ammunition was stored, where the cannons were used etc. The tour and the visitors center are great places to go the first time you are in Fort Totten.
Very interesting place to visit. The visitor center representatives are very nice polite and welcoming. They let me “park” my baby’s stroller near them while we were enjoying this historic spot. Besides that it’s a very interesting town to wander around. There is free parking before booth entrance.
