Honestly I didn't think the food was that tasty. The calamari was OK. It was literally fried squid. No herbs, no black pepper, not much flavor. The soup was simply broth, chicken, and broken vermicelli. No vegetables whatsoever. No green onion. No Basel. No bean sprouts. I should have ordered the vegetable version. Otherwise the waiters were excellent. The restaurant is very clean and has private booths, small tables, and large tables.
Over the years, I’ve been to Saigon Grill on University Place a number of times so I was happy to see that they relocated over to my neighborhood. They replaced a Korean restaurant that formally occupied the space.
I was pretty hungry, and I found the dishes, satisfying but somewhat lacking in interesting flavors and textures. Most of the dishes were passable, but mostly lackluster. The spring rolls were delicious and lightly fried. The service was friendly and competent. The room is nice enough, looks like a relatively quick and inexpensive remodel was done to the former Korean restaurant.
I think they opened only recently, so I am hoping they will hit their stride soon. Since I live close by, I will give it another try in the near future.
I've been a fan of Vietnamese food since it was called Sigon Grill and was very disappointed when they closed. Not sure it's the same owner, but the food was close enough to bring good memories.
My ultimate favorite spot in NYC. Tasty foods, easy portion for great price. Things can not go wrong at this place.
I usually order Cha Gio (spring roll) as an appetizer or Pho Bo during chilly time. *For Pho Bo, they have 2 sizes so it's suitable for any time.
For the first timer, I would recommend Pad Thai & Pork Chop(comes w/rice) and you have option to choose whether you want the pork chop cut or not.
*Make sure to pour or dip in the sauce that comes with. It makes the food more flavorful.
*They used to carry Jalapeno pickles and they were my favorite but they don't carry anymore due to the pandemic.
