Great place to fish. Would recommend coming early, unfortunately the park opens at 8am. Great place for a hike and once you follow the trail you will find a pier where you can fish and other fishermen are really friendly. Got one catch for the day, was really great meal.
It's a superb place for hiking, biking, roller skating, and jogging. All in the fresh air. You can either do all of the above mentioned on a paved surface or rocky terrain. Be sure to hydrate. Once you leave the parking area and head towards the fountain trail you will be gone for an easy 3 hours. I wore my sauna suit and enjoyed my workout.
Love this park. and its views. There are two separate entrances. Free bicycle rental can be reserved online. Paved and gravel paths. If you are lucky, you might spot water fowls and rabbits 🐇 . There are no shaded trees, so it's hot when the sun is high. There are picnic tables with benches with umbrellas (never seen it used). FYI, the park closes at dusk.
A Refreshing Escape at Shirley Chisholm State park
Visiting Shirley Chisholm State Park was an absolute delight and a breath of fresh air. As an avid nature lover, I couldn't have asked for a better place to spend a peaceful day away from the bustling city. From start to finish, the experience was nothing short of wonderful.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by well-maintained trails that meandered through the park's lush greenery. The park offers a variety of trails suitable for all fitness levels, from leisurely strolls to more challenging hikes, providing something for everyone. The trails are clearly marked and well-maintained, ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey.
The park's natural beauty is simply breathtaking. As I explored further, I encountered picturesque views of serene lakes and vibrant wildflowers that added a splash of color to the landscape. The abundance of wildlife was a pleasant surprise, with birdwatching enthusiasts having a field day spotting various species.
Facilities at the park were top-notch, including clean restrooms, picnic areas, and ample parking. The park staff were friendly and knowledgeable, providing helpful information and recommendations.
Shirley Chisholm State Park truly offers a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a fitness enthusiast, or simply seeking tranquility, this park is a must-visit. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable outdoor experience
Apparently, it used to be a landfill, but by far, this has to be the better of NYC State parks where you feel like you're actually out for a hike and not just a long walk.. you can also bike. they rent out bikes during the warm months.
Went on a weekday morning park was for empty for most of it..
This park is a hidden gem even tho it sits next to the Belt pkwy lol.
If you hike both sections of the park and hit every trail plus the main path on the outskirts, you can get in 7+ miles. Wide gravel trails and a paved path. There are plenty of signs to direct you. Lots of benches, tables, and garbage cans along the way. Couple piers I believe you can fish off of one. Some great views.
I knock the one star off because there is limited parking, and as far as State Park amenities, you're pretty limited, no ball courts, no grills, and almost no natural shade. I only saw Porta- potties. Could use some more evergreens along the northern trails to block out some of the traffic, and some sort of small boat launch for like canoes or kayaks would be pretty cool. Could also use some of those workout stations or pull up bars.
Overall, it's a great NYC state park. Will be back.
